Adventure programme - Ski Expedition in Lapland: Riisitunturi National Park

Day 1

Arrival in Kuusamo and welcome dinner

You will be picked up from Kuusamo airport in the afternoon or evening (based on flight schedules) for a half-hour drive to your adventure camp in the countryside of Kuusamo. You will be welcomed with a homemade dinner complete with our favorite local foods followed by an introduction to Finnish Sauna culture, complete with a refreshing roll in the snow.

Meals included: Dinner

Day 2

Gear check and first leg of the expedition

After fueling up with a big homemade breakfast, it is time for an adventure briefing and gear check in preparation for the coming expedition. Together, you and your guide will review the route and safety plan and get familiar with all the personal and common gear, ensuring you have everything you need to stay warm, dry and happy during the adventure and know how to use any equipment that may be new to you. The majority of gear will be carried in our high-quality expedition sledges.

After lunch and a transfer to the National Park of Riisitunturi, we will have a short ski tour to our first tent camp just outside of the national park. After the camp is set-up, we will explore the surroundings before returning back to camp to practise fire making and cook a delicious dinner by a campfire.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Snack, Dinner

Skiing/snowshoeing distance: about 5 kilometres (~3 miles)

Day 3

Heading to the North, relaxing in a wilderness sauna

Together, will make breakfast by the open fire. After cooking and enjoying breakfast we will clean the camp, always following the Leave No Trace policy as we pack our gear into the expedition sledges. We will point our compasses to the North and start skiing through forests, bogs and wetlands until we climb to the top of a hill where we will enjoy our lunch made over cooking stoves with beautiful views. After lunch we will continue towards Noukavaara hill where we can, on a clear day, see across Lapland to Russia. Late in the afternoon, we will reach our next camp: a wilderness cabin by a lake. A highlight of the day will be carrying the water from the lake to the wilderness sauna where we will rest our tired muscles before dinner. The night will be spent in a wilderness cabin in bunk beds. The cabin is a traditional wooden cabin without electricity or running water.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch , Snack, Dinner

Skiing/snowshoeing distance: about 8 kilometres (~5 miles)

Day 4

Ice fishing and skiing in the remote wilderness

After breakfast, we will drill holes into the frozen lake and try our luck in ice fishing. Later on, we will continue skiing to the West and outside of the National Park. Our camp lunch will be cooked on camp stoves and enjoyed in the middle of nature. This night will be spent in tents in the wilderness under the Northern sky. If we are lucky, the Northern lights may dance for us tonight.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Snack, Dinner

Skiing/snowshoeing distance: about 10 kilometres (~6 miles)

Day 5

Husky safari and daily life on the farm

Our short morning ski will take us to a family-run husky farm where we will try another form of transport well-known in Lapland: the dog sledge. These sledges are pulled by a team of lovable huskies, each of whom is well cared for and called by name by the lead musher. You’ll have the chance to get to know the dogs yourself and learn about their daily life.

After an outdoor lunch in a traditional Lappish teepee, we will continue the expedition back to the national park and to our final tent camp. This day is our longest day and it is full of activity!

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Snack, Dinner

Skiing/snowshoeing distance: about 13 kilometres (~8 miles)

Day 6

Final leg of the expedition

Our final skiing day takes us to the heart of Riisitunturi National Park through bogs and wetlands. We will put our fire making skills to the test as we cook our final camp lunch by the campfire. The final leg of our expedition takes us into an area that some say is one of the most “Instagrammable” spots in Finland.

We’ll say ‘until next time’ to Riisitunturi National Park and our transfer will return us to Adventure Apes Lodge late in the afternoon where we will do gear maintenance before enjoying the sauna and a well-deserved farewell dinner.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Snack, Dinner

Skiing/snowshoeing distance: about 8 kilometres (~5 miles)

Day 7

Time to say Goodbye, transfer back to the airport

We like to say a great adventure never ends; it merely changes form to become part of who you are. On day seven your adventure in this winter wonderland will transform into some of your best memories as you take off for Kuusamo airport to catch your return flight.

Meals included: Breakfast

This tour requires all adventurers to "get their hands dirty." We will work in small teams to carry the sledge (a.k.a. pulkka) and backpacks, containing personal gear as well as a portion of the shared supplies and gear. Camp chores including meal prep and cleanup will also be shared by the group.

The accommodation for the first and last nights is at Adventure Apes Lodge in the countryside of Kuusamo. Once a public primary school, the guesthouse has been newly renovated to provide clean and cosy, standard-level accommodations. The dorm-style rooms have bunk beds with private bathrooms and up to six people per room. Bedlinen and towels are included.

During the skiing expedition, three nights will be spent in tents in the wilderness. One night will be spent in a wilderness cabin with bunkbeds and a lakeside sauna.

Any items/luggage not needed during the expedition can be kept in a secure room at Adventure Apes Lodge.

Arctic conditions

This expedition takes place in Arctic winter conditions. The temperatures may vary from zero degrees to minus 35 degrees. In February the temperatures are colder, days shorter and trees are most likely covered in pure white snow - a true winter wonderland. In March the sun is shining making the days longer and warmer. The fluffy snow from the beginning of the season is getting harder and makes our skiing easier. Both in February and March we should have the chance to see the Northern Lights. In April the summer is almost around the corner and it is likely we can enjoy the sunshine and listen to birds singing a concert for us. The snow is disappearing and making way for the new life of spring so we will choose our routes carefully based on the conditions.

Adventure in photos

It was a very special and unforgettable moment travelling in the Finnish Lapland with Adventure Apes. It was my first time doing cross country skiing in the unique landscape of Finnish Lapland, dog sledding through the forest, snowshoeing and many more. The silence of Finnish winter is so calm and it made me feel like I’m totally in a different world. I will definitely come back to Lapland whenever I have the chance.
