Group size: 5-10
Activity level: Enthusiast
Best suited for adults in good fit condition with some multi-day riding experience and who will be comfortable with a full day of physical activity. Adventure programme - Mountain biking from Hossa to Syöte: National Parks and craft beer

Day 1

Arrival and welcome dinner

You and your gear will be picked up from Kuusamo airport in the afternoon or evening (based on the agreed flight schedule for the group) for an hour drive to your wilderness cabin in Hossa National Park. You will be welcomed with a homemade dinner complete with our favorite local foods. We will check out the bikes and have a tour and safety briefing, then wrap up your welcome day with an introduction to Finnish sauna culture complete with a refreshing swim in a crystal clear lake.

Meals included: Dinner

Day 2

Gear check and first leg of the adventure

Our adventure starts on Hossa National Park’s famous Sininen Saavutus Trail (translates to Blue Accomplishment Trail) that has made it to the IMBA Epic Trails list.

There are no big climbs but the terrain is undulating. Trails are hard-packed pine forest trails with rocks and roots to keep things interesting. We will cycle about 30 km to Värikallio Rock Paintings and have a trail lunch by the campfire. After we have taken in the 4000-year old rock paintings, we will separate from the main trail and head to Julma Ölkky canyon lake. From there we will ride ten kilometres on forest road and shoot back to single track to reach our overnight stay by Lake Irni. On the way, we can top up our hydration systems from natural springs. After we have settled into our cabin for the evening we will cook our dinner together. If you still have extra energy, you can try your rowing and fishing skills or just finish the day with a relaxing sauna by the lake.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Snack, Dinner
Cycling distance: about 50 kilometres (~30 miles), 10km gravel road, 40km single track

Day 3

Crossing the Irni Lake, riding through Kylmäluoma and stop at Taiwalkosken Brewery

After cooking breakfast, we will pack our overnight gear into the support van before a short ride to a lake crossing point where we will use rowboats to get to the other side of the Lake Irni.

We will enjoy the scenery dotted with sandy beaches that are usually occupied just by reindeer. Once we reach the shore, we will cycle to Kylmäluoma Hiking Area for lunch at a wilderness restaurant. We continue towards Taivalkoski following Päätalo Trail, small single track that is quite technical riding in places. No big climbs but the terrain and technical trails will make you break a sweat. We will probably meet more reindeer than people before we reach Taivalkoski Village where we will make a stop at for a refreshing pint of local beer (or soda) at Taiwalkosken Brewery. From there it is only a short ride to Vaara Sports hostel where our gear, dinner and a hot sauna will be waiting for us.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch , Snack, Dinner
Riding distance: about 40 kilometres, most of it on single track

Day 4

Freestyle day: Optional brewery tour, bodyboarding and more

After a buffet breakfast at the hostel, you can choose from a lot of excellent trails in the area that you can go and explore by yourself (maps and gpx-data is available). Or if you feel like a day off, you can wonder in a small Taivalkoski village and buy local gifts from the oldest still operating shop in Finland. Optional activities that you will need to book before the trip include the adventure park, body boarding in Taivalkoski River rapids, paddling in Ii River, or a tour at the local Taiwalkoski Brewery or a draisine ride. Prices and the availability of the activities will be provided to you before the trip.

Meals included: Breakfast, Dinner (Lunch today is at your own cost)

Day 5

Ride to Syöte National Park, crossing Ii River on a small traditional river boat

Today we will follow Ii river on a challenging single track, crossing the river with help from a local farmer and his trusty wooden river boat. Our journey then continues on remote single tracks towards Syöte National Park.

Our gear is waiting for us at Lapland Bike Hotel where you will enjoy the sauna, swimming pool and relaxing in the jacuzzi admiring the beautiful fjell scenery.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Snack, Dinner

Cycling distance: about 50 kilometres most of it on single track

Day 6

Exploring Syöte National Parks awesome trails

Our final day takes us to trails that are considered to be the best by many Finns. We will follow the same trail that is used in SyöteMTB-competition and if your holiday is on the same week as the race you have a chance to participate in the race (additional costs apply). There are nice climbs, fast downhills and beautiful trails along the Ice Age formed ridges. There are many technical sections, heaps of flowing fast single tracks and plenty of small lakes to dip into if things get too hot.

We’ll say ‘until next time’ to Finnish single tracks and have the final sauna and a well-deserved farewell dinner.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Snack, Dinner

Cycling: about 50 kilometres on single track trails

Day 7

Time to say Goodbye, transfer back to the airport

We like to say a great adventure never ends; it merely changes form to become part of who you are. On day seven your adventure in this single track wonderland will transform into some of your best memories as you take off for Kuusamo airport to catch your return flight.

Meals included: Breakfast

Trail and weather conditions

This expedition takes place in Finnish summer and Autumn conditions. The temperatures may vary from a few Celsius degrees to 3-35°C degrees. In June and July the temperatures are warmer and the days are long; with almost 24 hour daylight the Finnish summer is at it's best. Blueberries, mushrooms and other of nature’s free snacks are starting to pop-up in July and August. In September the berry season is in its full bloom and the Autumn colors can be breathtaking. Nights are starting to get darker, but we still have more than 10 hours of daylight. In October, the Autumn is moving fast forward, leaves start to fall and the temperatures are dropping. Nights are getting dark and cold, but there's also a chance to see the Northern Lights. Weather can be unpredictable so we might have to change our routes based on the weather conditions and safety reasons.
