Adventure programme - Bike holiday around Lake Yli-Kitka in Lapland

Day 1

Arrival, gear check and welcome dinner

a half-hour drive to Adventure Apes Lodge in the countryside of Kuusamo. You will be welcomed with a homemade dinner complete with our favorite local foods. Next, your guide will give you an adventure briefing and you will get familiar with all the personal and common gear, ensuring you have everything you need to stay safe and happy during the week. You will finish the evening with an introduction to Finnish Sauna which plays an integral part of Finnish culture.

Day 2

Finnish lifestyles of the past and present

After fueling up with a big homemade breakfast we will start our journey. The overnight and other extra gear will be carried in our support van from accommodation to accommodation.

We’ll follow the South shore of Lake Yli-Kitka for about 15 kilometers before arriving in Lohiranta Village and the Local Museum of Posio where you will learn about what life was like in the old days.

To learn about Finland today, we will arrange a visit with one of the locals who will invite us into their home for lunch and to tell us about Finnish family life. After the home visit, we will ride West for about 10 kilometers to find an old log transfer station and learn about Finnish timber logging history. After a campfire coffee/tea we will continue for another 8 kilometers to reach our overnight stay at Livohka Lodge. After freshening up, we’ll have a short walking tour around the surroundings and you can visit the restaurant on your own if you wish. In the evening, a local fishing family will cook us a special open fire dinner in the traditional Lappish Hut next to Lake Livo.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Snack, Open-fire Dinner
Cycling distance: about 33 kilometres

Day 3

Hike to the Lappish Riviera and experience authentic Finnish cottage life in an old logging cabin

Today we will pack our backpacks and head for an overnight hike to what some call the Lappish Riviera, walking through forests and learn about the local flora and fauna. In the middle of the hike we will cross the lake with small rowing boats. After our camp lunch by the lake you may go swimming on a silky beach or just relax and listen to the silence of nature.

In the afternoon, we will arrive to our next accommodation: Old Logging Cabin and now it is your chance to experience real Finnish cottage life. You will make some firewood to heat up the old traditional wood-heated sauna and carry the water we will need from the lake.

Dinner will be cooked together and enjoyed under the Northern Sky in a cosy fireplace right next to the lake. Accommodations are in bunk beds in the simple cabin with everyone sharing the same room.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch , Snack, Dinner
Walking distance: about 6 kilometres

Day 4

Meet and feed reindeer and overnight stay at Lapin Satu Hotel

Today we will cook our breakfast and do all the cabin chores like washing the dishes and cleaning together. After the cabin shines like new we will hike back to Livohka and hit the road by bikes again. We will cycle about 18 kilometers to traditional reindeer farm for lunch. You will have a chance to meet the reindeer herder, feed the reindeer and buy some handicrafts made by local artisans.

Our next hotel is a 15 kilometer ride. At Lapin Satu (Laplands Saga) our dinner table will be set for us to enjoy an evening meal before relaxing our tired muscles in the Sauna. We’ll also have the chance to swim in a third lake: Lake Posio.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Snack, Dinner
Walking distance: about 3,5 kilometres
Riding distance: about 34 kilometres

Day 5

Explore Posio Village life, visit a ceramic centre and local supermarket

This is the shortest riding day but loaded with culture and a great chance to find local souvenirs. After a buffet breakfast, we will cycle 3 kilometres to Posio Village and arrive to Pentik Ceramic Cultural Centre, visit the International Coffee Cup Museum, and have a tour in the ceramic factory.

After lunch, we will load our support van with our souvenirs and visit the local supermarket where your guide will tell you more about Finnish cuisine and you can buy some salmiakki or other favourite local snacks. In the afternoon, we will cycle 7 kilometres to Himmerki Wilderness Hotel where we will stay once again by the lake. After freshening up in the sauna and swimming in Lake Kitka, we will do our evening walk to the nearby forest to learn about Shamans.

You will have the option to book a Kalevala bone-setting treatment from a local healer (at additional cost).

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch , Snack, Dinner
Riding distance: about 10 kilometers

Day 6

Visit to a fishing harbour, lunch at a Sheep Farm and return to the lodge

Today we will cycle 7 kilometres to a fishing harbour on the shores of Lake Yli-Kitka to learn about fishing. (For example: How do you fish in the winter when there’s a meter of ice in the lake?) We will also choose the fish that will be served for our dinner.

From the harbour, we will cycle 7 kilometers to a local Sheep Farm where we will visit another Finnish home and enjoy our lunch with locals again. Bellies full, we will learn why their breed of Finnish sheep is so special and how to farm sheep in Lapland. If we are lucky enough to come on sheering day, we may even have a chance to try our skills as a shearer. Our last leg of this cycling trip is an 8 kilometer ride back to Adventure Apes Lodge.

You’ll have a chance to relax and maybe have an afternoon nap. If you want to you can collect your own herbs for your natural foot bath in the sauna. Later on, we will have a farewell dinner and enjoy a photo show from our amazing week.

Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Snack, Dinner
Riding distance: about 22 kilometres

Day 7

Time to say Goodbye, transfer back to the airport

Trail and weather conditions

This expedition takes place in Finnish summer and Autumn conditions. The temperatures may vary from a few Celsius degrees to 3-35°C degrees. In June and July the temperatures are warmer and the days are long; with almost 24 hour daylight the Finnish summer is at it's best. Blueberries, mushrooms and other of nature’s free snacks are starting to pop-up in July and August. In September the berry season is in its full bloom and the Autumn colors can be breathtaking. Nights are starting to get darker, but we still have more than 10 hours of daylight. In October, the Autumn is moving fast forward, leaves start to fall and the temperatures are dropping. Nights are getting dark and cold, but there's also a chance to see the Northern Lights. Weather can be unpredictable so we might have to change our routes based on the weather conditions and safety reasons.
